Nice, huh?

Windows Phone 8.1 vs. Android & iOS

Well, as some of you may know I’m an avid fanboy of technology. I love and use all computing platforms. I’m a huge fan of Mac OS X but also Google Android and Apple iOS. So, lately I’ve purchased a second phone from a small company from Florida called BLU and I got a Windows Phone. Here are my thoughts about the device and platform.

It’s the BLU Win HD LTE and it’s a very neat little 5″ phone. And it’s running Windows Phone 8.1. Obviously, the question beg: How is WP 8.1 vs Android and iOS? Honestly for a geek like me it’s not close at all. It’s heavily crippled by the number of great apps available, including other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. It doesn’t support third party keyboards either such as the excellent Swift Key. It’s just years behind Android and iOS.

But, for the average users going on Facebook, Tweeting or posting on Instagram it’s just fine. Music, photography and gaming is also good. But geek freaks like me, nope.

But there is hope coming over soon and that is Windows 10 Mobile. For Microsoft and their phone business, everything is hanging on it.

My Thoughts on Windows 10

Did Microsoft finally pull it off with Windows 10?! YES they did! Is it really better then our beloved Windows 7? YES I believe it is. I have a PC running 7, should I upgrade? Yes. Running 8.1? YES, get that junk out of the way! So, yes, I’m not joking when I say this: Microsoft is again the exciting company I once enjoyed. Surely, thanks to their new CEO, Satya Nadella.

Now their vision has become reality: One OS to rule them all. PC, tablet and smartphone. Will it be enough to return Microsoft to the forefront of profitability? I don’t know, only time will tell. But I will tell you what I do know based on my experience with Windows 10, so far.

Last weekend, I’ve upgraded my boring PC down in the basement, from Windows 7 Home Premium. I liked what I saw. But more importantly, liked how it felt. Windows 10 is not like 8.1 at all. It is finally tuned for all devices, so obviously feels great on my old PC. No more of that tablet’ish GUI crap. It’s a PC desktop at last. Back, is the Start button but with a twist of freshness, with live tiles. Also, an all new Control Panel – A much refreshed change. Now it’s more clear where to locate stuff. Very slick and modern. Oh and that new browser called Edge that replaces IE,  it’s beautiful, fast and feels light. Easily, a browser that matches the prowess of Chrome and Firefox. IE is still there though, for the nostalgic I guess.

But, for me, here’s the real kicker. Because, who cares for a stupid old PC sitting there like a brick, right? The kicker is when I installed it on my recently purchased Asus tablet. It came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. And for a budget tablet, it was a very shitty experience too. I was about to return it for a refund because it was just bad…until I thought, let’s upgrade this sucker to Windows 10. Upgrading is free anyways, right? Well, great decision. My crappy tablet suddenly feels good, thanks to Windows 10. Switched to Tablet Mode it’s a thing of beauty. And a keeper. It’s no iOS or Android but Microsoft is definitely on the right path. Any full grown PC apps work. It’s a tablet experience but more powerful. Love it. They did it their own way combining the best of the two most popular OS’s and adding their best too.

So, stop reading this. Go get Windows 10 now.

The Smartphone Takes Over

You may not have noticed but, since today, BitBurn dot org is now looking a lot better on your smartphone. That’s because I am using a WP theme that is enhanced for mobile devices. The web is changing friends, and the PC is no longer the dominant platform for browsing the web. And that’s a good thing.

I’m a firm believer of the next big thing and emerging technologies. I love that the web is evolving. And I love using new tools to get to it, like smartphone and tablet. My main computer is my smartphone and has been for quite some time actually!

And I’m willing to bet my right nut that Microsoft’s next big release, namely Windows 10 coming this summer, won’t even make a ripple in the tech stratosphere. People are already gone. Everyone has a smartphone!

In 2007 when Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone… I’m thinking maybe Steve Balmer, then the CEO of Microsoft, instead of laughing should have rushed back to Redmond and start building a great smartphone! Like Google did with Android.

Yep, I got an iPhone 6 Plus

thumb-6-newSo, after bitching that the iPhone 6 Plus was too expensive for me, back in October well now I got one. I’m such a nutcase! But, seriously it really is an amazing device. You pay much but you get much. Plus I got a good deal on it. Okay I’m done justifying my purchase.

The iPhone 6 is too expensive

OK I want to get this out of the way. I would’ve like to get my hands on the new iPhone 6. I really did. But, I think Apple is really pushing it this time with its price.

In Canada, it cost a whooping $265 plus tax for the 4.7″ iPhone with 16gb capacity on a two year contract. That is ridiculous. Sure it’s the best device out there. It’s thin, light and has a great build quality.

But get this, it cost a grotesque $485 for the Plus version! That’s $969 off contract for the 64gb! That’s easily over a thousand dollar with tax.

Well, sorry Apple but I’m going to have to stick with Android for now.
